In daily life, the most intuitive contact for screen users is nothing more than televisions and mobile phones, whether it is a full screen (mostly LCD panel), curved screen (OLED panel), or folding screen (OLED panel), consumers are interested in the screen, but do not understand the screen itself. So, what's the difference between an OLED screen and a LCD screen? What's the difference between a mobile phone and a TV made from them?

Difference between LCD screen and OLED screen

At present, in the flat panel TV and smartphone technology camp, LCD and OLED are relatively common display technologies in the market, and each display technology occupies a certain market share in their market. Before we understand the difference between LCD and OLED, let's take a look at their respective fundamentals.

1. The principle of LCD display.

The imaging principle of LCD is that the liquid crystal is placed between two pieces of conductive glass, driven by the electric field between the two electrodes, causing the liquid crystal molecules to twist the nematic electric field effect, in order to control the light source transmission or shielding function, produce light and shade between the power supply and display the image, if the color filter is added, the color image can be displayed.

2. The principle of OLED display.

OLED, or organic light-emitting diode display, is composed of a layer of light-emitting materials embedded between two electrodes. When the voltage is input, the carrier moves through the organic layer until the electron hole is recombined to achieve energy conservation and release the excess energy in the form of light pulses. At this point, one of the electrodes is transparent and the light emitted can be seen. It is usually composed of indium tin oxide (ITO).

If OLED is divided by driving mode, it can be divided into PMOLED (passive driving) and AMOLED (active driving). AMOLED originated from Samsung, each pixel is equipped with a switch TFT (thin film transistor), its drive mode is easier to achieve high brightness, high resolution, high color performance, low energy consumption, this kind of panel is widely used in consumer electronics products.

PMOLED originates from LG, its structure is simple, the manufacturing process is easy, can effectively reduce the manufacturing cost, fast response, and has great potential in the display of simple micro devices. However, PMOLED will have the problems of high power consumption and reduced life, and the product size is limited to about 5 inches.

At present, most of the mainstream OLED screens on the market are AMOLED technology.

3. What's the difference between LCD screen and OLED screen?

LCD and OLED screens have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the differences between them are mainly shown in the following seven aspects.

OLED responds faster than LCD.

Ordinary LCD TV will have delay (residual shadow), this is because the response speed can not keep up, when watching sports events or playing games, the picture will be significantly different. Generally speaking, the response time of LCD is 10ms, while OLED can do 0.001ms. No matter watching movies with OLED TV or OLED mobile phone, there will be no residual shadow, and it can also achieve better sound and picture synchronization, and consumers will have a better sense of experience when watching movies or playing games.

OLED has higher contrast than LCD.

The liquid crystal layer cannot be completely closed, and when the LCD panel shows black, some light will pass through the color layer. The black that users see through the LCD screen is actually a mixture of white and black gray, like a white flashlight shining on a black film, and the black you see from the other side of the film is actually gray with a sharp decline in brightness, not pure black. Unlike OLED, the OLED screen has a higher contrast. When showing black, you can directly turn off the pixels in the black area, achieving an almost pure black effect.



LCD has light leakage problem, OLED does not.

The biggest problem with the LCD panel screen is light leakage, which is caused by the use of backlight units. The OLED is a self-luminous characteristic, it is each pixel as an independent light source, which needs to be lit to the limit of which pixel, so there is almost no light leakage on the OLED screen.

OLED has a wider visual angle than LCD.

OLED screens have a wider visual angle than LCD screens. Take the TV as an example, no matter where you sit and watch OLED TV, the experience of watching TV is the same, while LCD TV, sometimes sitting on the side to watch will affect the viewing effect.

OLED is thinner but has a shorter life than LCD.

Due to the existence of backlight layer and liquid crystal layer, LCD screen is thicker than OLED screen. In addition, the "light" and "thin" nature of the OLED makes a curved screen possible. Because OLED is an organic material, its aging rate is much faster than LCD, there will be phenomena such as screen burning, and its life is shorter.

We know from people in the industry that the residual shadow or burning screen in OLED is due to the lack of blue life, and the blue attenuation will lead to changes in the white picture of OLED TV. After consumers buy an OLED TV, they will find that the white picture is getting more and more yellow every month, because its blue light is getting weaker and weaker.

OLED is more expensive than LCD.

At present, LCD has developed very mature, and the manufacturing cost of products has been reduced year by year. OLED display technology is still in the stage of development, the manufacturing process is complex, the manufacturing maturity is still climbing, and the manufacturing cost is high. When I discussed the OLED screen with people in the industry, I learned that the manufacturing cost of OLED is at least 2 times more expensive than that of LCD panels. At present, LCD panels have been widely used in display devices, while OLED screens are mostly used in products such as high-end televisions or flagship mobile phones, and the price is much more expensive than LCD products.

Which is more eye-protecting, OLED or LCD screen?

OLED and LCD screens can be used on devices such as mobile phones, televisions, notebooks and monitors. Which of these two panels is more eye-protecting for consumers? In order to make it easier for users to understand, the author takes Blu-ray and splash screen problems as examples to see who is more eye-protecting.

In fact, both LCD and OLED screens emit blue light. Because the OLED screen is self-luminous, it is more harmful to the eyes in dim light, while the display effect of LCD in dim light is better, and the damage to the eyes is relatively less.

Strobe, because OLED often uses PWM dimming to quickly switch the screen light source for dimming, although the human eye is not aware of, but in slow motion, its screen is flickering at a fixed frequency, low frequency is particularly harmful. The splash screen will have an obvious irritation to the user's eyes, coupled with the high contrast of the OLED screen, for the "stay up party" (OLED mobile phone users), the OLED screen has a great impact on eyesight.

Earlier, LCD display hardware also has an obvious splash screen phenomenon, under the guidance of relevant policies and consumer demand, manufacturers began to promote "no splash screen". For medium and heavy mobile phone and TV users, the strobe of OLED will cause serious visual fatigue and even cause migraine for users who use OLED display hardware.

Therefore, on the whole, LCD screen is more eye-protecting than OLED screen.

What is the difference between LCD and OLED products?

In the display device, what screen to use directly affects people's perception and experience. No matter in the large screen, such as color TV, smart tablet, or in the small screen, such as mobile phone, most of them are liquid crystal screen (LCD). Nowadays, with the development of OLED screen technology, some high-end televisions and flagship phones are equipped with OLED screens, so is there a significant difference between LCD and OLED screens?

1. Which is better, LCD TV or OLED TV?

When LCD screen and OLED screen are used in TV sets, there are obvious differences in three aspects. The author thinks that the relationship between them is like the sun (OLED self-illumination) and the moon (LCD needs a backlight plate as an auxiliary light source). First of all, they are different display technologies, and there are essential differences in the principle of luminescence (not to repeat, the previous content is described).

Secondly, due to the different appearance and shape, the structure of LCD panel is more complex, so it is difficult to be extremely thin in thickness. OLED does not need a backlight, the structure is simpler, the body can be extremely slim, and it can even make a TV like paper. The flexible and flexible characteristics of OLED can be made into special-shaped screens such as curved screens with a stronger appearance plasticity.
Third, the color displayed by OLED is closer to the real world, especially in black scenes. When it displays a black scene, it just turns off the pixels and does not glow. It is really pure black. But LCD can not do this, almost all LCD TVs will leak light when showing black scenes.

The color gamut coverage value of OLED is relatively high, and NTSC is generally around 95%, which can provide nearly perfect natural color. Its visual angle can reach 178 ° and the picture is not distorted. No matter which angle you look at, you can enjoy outstanding pictures. It can directly control the light and dark changes of pixel points without the need to deflect the liquid crystal molecules like LCD. It performs well on high-speed dynamic pictures.

In the field of television, OLED screen has many advantages, but it is subject to the rate of good products. It can be successfully mass produced in the size of 55-65 inches, and the price is high. Due to the relatively mature technology development, LCD TV can produce larger size TV, and the price is not expensive. We can see that LCD TVs on the market have a wide range of sizes, ranging from 32 inches to 120 inches, and even larger sizes, but OLED TVs are mostly 55 inches.

2. Who is suitable for LCD phones or OLED phones?

Mobile phone products have become the fastest updating consumer electronics products. On mobile phones, buy LCD or OLED phones? You may be able to find the answer through the screen quality, service life and power consumption issues that consumers care about.

First of all, OLED displays better in contrast and black. Contrast refers to the ratio of white to black. The higher the contrast, the thicker the color of the picture. Because the LCD has a backlight layer, the display of black is not pure black. OLED black does not emit light. It can directly turn off some pixels in the black area, so the black display effect is more pure.

Secondly, LCD has more advantages in the service life that consumers care about. Why do you say that? Look at the problem of screen burning and flashing, and you will understand. Perhaps you would say that it is 2021 now, and OLED mobile phones will not have this situation, right? But in fact, according to the news exposed by the domestic and foreign media, the phenomenon of mobile phone screen burning still exists, but the technology is improving, and the probability of screen burning has also decreased significantly.

For example, changing the pixel arrangement of the screen can effectively increase the service life of the OLED screen, but the problem is that the display effect of the screen will decline. In contrast, LCD screen phones have no such problems at all. They not only have a long life, but also are more eye friendly.

LCD has the advantage of changing the power by changing the current/voltage to change the brightness of the mobile phone screen. This adjustment method is DC dimming. OLED uses PWM dimming. Compared with DC dimming, PWM dimming is in the form of alternating current, which is constantly powered on and off to adjust the brightness of the screen. Because the strobe is too fast, the human eye cannot capture the process of the screen lighting, but it can be seen intuitively by using mobile phone video.

Third, in terms of power consumption, OLED is more power-saving than LCD because its pixels work independently. When the LCD is turned on, the whole backlight layer is turned on. It is either turned on or off. Each pixel of OLED is independent, and some pixels can be lit separately, which can achieve screen display and greatly reduce the number of times the screen is lit.

In the field of mobile phones, OLED screens are widely used. OLED screens are used in screen fingerprints, off-screen cameras and folding mobile phones, but there are many mobile phone brands using LCD screens, which have their own positioning and development plans.

If you are sensitive to light and have low requirements for pure black color, the budget is limited, and the LCD screen hardware is more suitable for you. It is better to start with OLED technology when it is more mature. If you are not sensitive to light, pursue the fashion and artistic sense of products, have no economic pressure, and want to try new high-tech, then OLED screen hardware can meet your needs.
